Percentage of EPA+DHA in red blood cell membranes. Strong predictor of cardiovascular and cognitive health.
The Omega-3 Index measures the total EPA and DHA fatty acids in red blood cell membranes, expressed as a percentage.
An index above 8% is protective against cardiovascular disease. Most Western populations have an index around 4-5%.
Best sources: fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), algae-based supplements. Plant sources (chia, flax) contain ALA, which is less efficient.
